The life we aspire to build for ourselves is often also a cage of our own making; because the mind craves structure and meaning in order to make sense out of a seemingly disordered and chaotic world, we rely on relationships and related identities to understand our place in the big scheme of things - to realize a sense of community, identity, belonging.

But what begins in earnest can sometimes take on a life of its own - a life not necessarily envisioned by our internal selves. The weight and circumstance of resulting life, architected and evolved by each in turn, can leave the spirit feeling trapped and burdened. We long to fly away, but are held fast by responsibilities and obligations.

The safety we imagine in the family "unit" is a metaphor on several levels, but we don't always see things for what they really are.
